Risk Adjustment

HCC Tip Tuesdays

Remember that ICD-10-CM codes are updated on October 1st of each year. The dating system can be confusing—for example, the “2017” ICD-10 codes took effect on October 1, 2016.

The appropriate code set must be used based upon the date of service (or date of discharge). This means that your 2016 reviews will be coded in the 2016 ICD-10-CM code set for dates of service/discharge through September 30, 2016; and coded in the new 2017 code set for dates of service October 1, 2016 through year’s end. All software systems will also require updates to ensure that the proper codes are being utilized.
